NOTE: Unfortunately, SCREWJOB has been entirely CANCELLED by the Valley Young Company, and thus the Woodstock performances of MONSTER have also been cancelled. It was then necessary, for various reasons, to slightly limit our run of the one play. However, we also wanted to make this happen for those who might still be interested in seeing MONSTER, and so, we packed it into a single day.

Nasty Shadows is back with this piece from multi award-winning Canadian playwright Daniel MacIvor. Monster is a one-man show that explores the nature of evil and questions the possible link between media images of violence and actual crimes. Watch as one actor transforms into a series of characters whose lives are eerily related, taking the audience on a spellbinding ride into a horrible, grisly weekend in June. One weekend that sets off a shock wave of horror that reverberates throughout dozens of lives, in unexpected ways. Join Adam and a cast of characters, both familiar and strange, as they delve into the depths of darkness that surround the core of any man or woman. Are you a Monster?

ABOUT MacIVOR

Daniel MacIvor is an award winning Canadian playwright/actor/director. Born in Cape Breton he has been creating new theatre since 1986. For 20 years MacIvor was the artistic director of his own company, da da kamera. He continues to create new theatre, and also works in film. In 2006 MacIvor won the Governor General’s award for Drama for his collection of plays I Still Love You, and he was the 2008 recipient of the Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, Canada’s largest theatre award. MacIvor will be performing his new solo show, This Is What Happens Next, in Ottawa during May/June.

We will be running in Fredericton in conjunction with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress 2011 being held on the UNB and STU Campuses.

The Table Experiments

The Table Experiments is a story about friendship — and knowing what we want. The telling of this story becomes an integral part of the friendship held by the three story tellers, and although it may take the length of the story for the tellers to actually realize their friendship, and how essential the telling was to that friendship’s continuation, it is nonetheless the telling of this story that explodes into a sense of infinite play – for actor and audience alike! – leading to a central question: Can’t kids just play forever?

Watch as Nasty Shadows Becky Forbes, Michael Holmes-Lauder, and Matthew Spinney run, hop, skip, jump, crawl, and even fly their way through this mysterious tale of childhood friendship. The aforementioned actors are directed by the writer in this premiere staging, with technical direction provided by Taylor Sinstadt.

Saint John Theatre Company has generously partnered with Nasty Shadows to help enable the run of the show in the Port City, and the Shadows look forward to playing in the new BMO Rehearsal Hall, inside the beautifully renovated Saint John Theatre Company Building.

The play is set to run mid-April in our usual cities, on some odd days of the week, but alternate/new venues:

We’re excited to initiate a co-production of the play for the Saint John run, partnering with the Saint John Theatre Company to stage the show in their new performance space on Princess St. — it’s a great open space that will accommodate us well.

Hope to see you out to support this new focus to develop some original work.

Coming later in the spring will be a one-man performance of Daniel MacIvor’s Monster to run in conjunction with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress 2011 being held on the UNB Fredericton Campus. This is an exciting opportunity to share some local work with a new audience — and we’ll also be sharing this new MacIvor piece with a run in Saint John as well.

ABOUT THE PLAYS & PLAYWRIGHTS

Play

by Samuel Beckett

Play is, at base, the story of a love triangle between one man and two women. But this drama is played out in a world created by Samuel Beckett which finds the lovers rather confined in terms of their ability to speak and interact with one another. Through a spotlight interrogation and mandatory refusal to hear each other, the lovers rapidly confess their innermost thoughts to an unsuspecting audience.

Samuel Beckett is a theatrical force, unparalleled and much imitated, but never matched — nothing else could ever be quite like a Beckett play. Born in 1906, Beckett spent time as an acedemic; working for and with James Joyce; and defined himself as a brilliant novelist as well. All this before finally pushing into theatre by bringing Waiting For Godot to the stage in 1953, after which he arguably had an unprecedented influence on drama, perhaps only dwarfed by Shakespeare.

The Dumb Waiter

by Harold Pinter

The Dumb Waiter, written by Harold Pinter, finds two hit-men awaiting further instructions for the “job”. The two men are holed up in the basement of an unknown building for an indeterminate amount of time. What transpires is a whirlwind of emotion and uncertainty as the two men grapple with the weight of their job, the nature of their relationship, and whether or not to hoard all the tea for themselves. Pinter’s dense yet terse dialogue drives the men into a frenzy that leads to an (un)expected conclusion.

Harold Pinter is a world famous playwright and began making theatre in the 1950s. He had also certainly made his mark in the world of film and acting during his lifetime. Pinter was the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2005 and the Swedish Academy cited him for being “generally regarded as the foremost representative of British drama in the second half of the 20th century.”

Nasty Shadows will be remounting our production of Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter in an evening of theatre that will also see a new staging of Samuel Beckett’s odd love triangle drama, Play.
