Fundy Fringe Festival Reviews – Day 4

House: A Stand Up Sit Down One Man Comedy Nightmare | Saint John Arts Centre
The character’s maniac energy fills the theatre from the moment of his entrance. The caustic irrepressible anger is palpable. Like watching a building implode, it’s a fascinating process to be part of. Victor’s hatreds and dislikes are not a burden he bears lightly, if at all. From happy councillors, through demon mothers, to bondage burdened borderline incestuous wives, this comedy moves quickly, so don’t miss it.

“Marvelous acting, incredibly funny though there is a dark undercurrent in his story.

REVIEW from fall 2018 run of HOUSE:

“Shannon brings an immense amount of physicality to his portrayal of Victor. He commits entirely, whether he is dancing in glee, re-enacting a memory, or literally jumping from the stage into the audience. Breaking the fourth wall while continuing to display the brokenness of his mind, Victor prances in and out of his story to reassure us of his sanity.”

Victor looks angry and rolls a tiny invisible ball between his thumb and forefinger. He stops.

Victor: Hello. Thank you for coming. Thank you for not going someplace else. Thank you for not staying home and watching a show about an angry doctor on teevee. Thank you for coming here.

Victor: So this one week Mister “Call-Me-Joe” (and I won’t: call him Joe) he says to us:
“Hey Guys …”
“Guys” or:
“Hey Gang …”
Gang or guys he’s always calling us. Makes you feel like you should be on a field trip to a museum or something holding on to a rope.
“Hey Gang, next week for Creative Therapy I want you to create something at home and then bring it in and show it to the group.”
Okay. So I do. I go home, make it up, come in, sit down, do it.

Victor: … and you stick your head in the hole and this is what you see: you see him and you think: What, he doesn’t even look sad! He looks bored, this is a rip. I want my money back. Five bucks! I want my money back. But then before you can look away his face goes all foggy and it’s not him any more, it changes into an actual real flesh of you, but you when you were your saddest saddest ever in your whole life and you look and you think Oh My God I Can’t Even Look At That so you look down at your feet but your feet aren’t there cause your head’s in a hole! so you look back and that’s when it hits you … right there, in that secret of the secret …

Nasty Shadow’s double-bill of House invites while Ohio Impromptu drags >>>

Nasty Shadows Theatre Co. treats New Brunswick to a double feature of Samuel Beckett’s Ohio Impromptu and Daniel MacIvor’s House. An interesting combination of two starkly different plays.

House is a one man show that comes across more like a crazy stranger telling you their life story while you wait for the bus, in the best way. MacIvor has written an hour-long monologue, but Victor (Scott Shannon) instantly squashes any fear that you are in for a dull lecture with his captivating storytelling. With his enchanting performance, the … [READ MORE] >>>
