CALL FOR SHADOWS
FALL 2012 & SPRING 2013 CALL FOR SHADOWS
(i.e. CAST/CREW CALL)
BECOME A SHADOW — AUDITIONS ARE HAPPENING!
Auditions are being held for our Fall 2012 & Spring 2013 productions. Each season will find the shows running in both Fredericton and Saint John on successive weekends. Production dates TBA, but the Fall show usually runs the end of October/early November, while the Spring show usually runs late March/April.
NOTE: The Fall production will begin rehearsals the week of Aug. 27th/2012.
CREW CALL
We are also looking for anyone interested in any aspects of backstage work, from publicity to stage managing, to technical work involving lights and sound — you folks are the true Shadows.
For those interested in working off-stage in any capacity, please send an email to nastyshadows@gmail.com at anytime with the subject line: NASTY CREW. Please include what your area of interest might be and any relevant experience you wish to note. There is no need for interested Crew to come out to the audition sessions unless you just want to say “hi” in person, in which case come on by.
WHERE/WHEN ARE THE AUDITIONS?
Marshall d’Avray Hall – Room #120 (The Drama Room)
Tuesday, August 21st @6-9pm
Wednesday, August 22nd @6-9pm
HELP US CHOOSE A PLAY!
The chosen plays for the upcoming 2012/2013 will be determined after the audition session and will be based on the actors who are both appropriate and available to form the necessary cast of a given show. Possible scripts for staging include:
A Delicate Balance by Edward Albee
Six Characters In Search of An Author by Luigi Pirandello
The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman
Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare
Welcome (or Make That Noise!) by Scott Shannon
… and a number of others, but that gives you an idea of the possibilities.
WHO SHOULD AUDITION?
Anyone. Seriously.
We are looking to possibly cast children and/or young adults as well as older-to-old adults, so please do not let age be a hindrance to auditioning. The plays in consideration for staging involve characters from a wide variety of ages, gender, and race, so we would love to see any and everyone come out.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE AUDITION?
– Please be prepared to do both a reading and some level of physical action. (I.e. dress comfortably to play)
– Readings will be provided from a variety of possible scripts.
– Prepared audition pieces are most welcome as well, but everyone will read from the provided pieces.
– Depending on attendance, there may also be a portion of group auditions using some multi-character scenes from the possible scripts.
– Please know your schedule and availability so you can let us know at the audition when you might be free for rehearsal, should you be cast.
Call-backs may be necessary, and if so, these will occur on Thursday, August 23rd @6pm at the same location.
PURPOSE OF HOLDING AUDITIONS
Nasty Shadows has traditionally worked as a small group of local actors known to each other through other projects, etc., many of us having worked together for years. Every so often we hold an audition session as a way to broaden the pool of our collective.
The Company is interested in staging a couple of plays that call for larger ensembles. As always, the plays we do hold a level of equal engagement for all involved and lean towards minimalistic production. Bare-bones acting has always been our strong point, and this current audition session is aimed at strengthening that foundation for the coming season, as well as future productions. So, if you are not cast in the fall show please know we now have you in our sights and know whether to use you in the Spring or in any production we stage in the coming years — we may simply email you in the future rather than require another audition.
ABOUT THE REHEARSAL PROCESS
We are a collection of amateur theatre practitioners devoted to a high performance quality. As such, we generally rehearse for 8-week sessions beginning with rehearsals happening twice per week and gradually gaining frequency as we approach opening night. We ask for a level of commitment to the project at hand — if you like to spread yourself thin, than you probably aren’t for us. We will ask you to come prepared for rehearsals, having done line work and such at home. If you are looking to commit yourself to a project that will demand the best of you, then please come out to the auditions.
CAN’T MAKE THE AVAILABLE AUDITION TIMES?
Why not? If the reason is unavoidable and you do wish to audition then please email nastyshadows@gmail.com with the subject line: NASTY AUDITION. It is encouraged that you try to make the available times.

It was really great to see such good numbers come out for the auditions, and so much talent — all of you have provided numerous options to consider.
In case anyone is reading this, an email will go out some time late Friday about casting … thanks again so much for the expressed interest in being a Shadow!
