    ~ READ/PLAY WITH THE SHADOWS ~
    ~ OPEN INVITATION ~
Come CELEBRATE 20 years of Nasty theatre in the Shadows

    WHAT’S HAPPENING?
We want to READ a play with YOU, our audience!

    WHEN’S IT HAPPENING?
Our first reading will take place Tuesday, February 26th @7pm.

    WHERE’S IT HAPPENING?
UNB Campus, Marshall d’Avray Hall, Room TBA.

    OKAY, BUT WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING?
We thought it might be fun to get together and read a play. Then it seemed like a good opportunity to broaden those options a bit to play with folks we might not normally play with, and to read plays we may never possibly stage. So, this is an OPEN INVITATION to anyone who has or has not seen a Shadow show — we just wanna read a play with a group of people! The idea will be to select a script with a larger cast, a group size we may not normally be able to call together for a full production but could at least gather in a room for an evening to imagine the possibilities … a public reading with Shadows and whomever else shows up!

    THE SUICIDE by Nicolai Erdman

    THE SUICIDE by Nicolai Erdman

    WHAT’S THE PLAY WE’RE READING?
With hopes this might become a recurrent gathering, the first play we’d like to share with you and read together is a black comedy that feels just right for those February blues:

    THE SUICIDE by Nikolai Erdman
The Suicide was written in 1928 but its performance was forbidden during the Stalinist era and it was only produced in Russia several years after Erdman’s death. Today it is regarded as one of the finest plays to have come out of Communist Russia. The plot centres around a young, unemployed man, Semyon, who believes the answer to his problems is to learn to play the tuba. However, his plan fails and he contemplates suicide. His neighbour, Alexander, decides to make money from Semyon’s misery by exploiting his intended suicide to several bidders. These bidders planned to exploit Semyon’s death to the furtherance of their own individual cause. The Intelligentsia, represented by Aristarch, is the first to approach him. From this point on, Semyon finds himself being manipulated by various people representing the business world, the arts, the workers, romance, etc. During the course of the play, each character reveals the worst side of their personality.

    HOW’S THIS GONNA WORK?
We are going to project a copy of the play from which we can all read. If you have a tablet, laptop, etc. (phones might be too small?) we will supply you with a link to the PDF file when you arrive (or in the days leading up to the reading).

We have been standing in front of our audience for 20 years, so it would be nice to mingle and share in a Nasty theatrical adventure of a different sort … please join us in the Shadows.
